Pleats will forever remind me of secondary school. Whenever my old school gets mentioned, nearly the first thing everyone asks me is whether that was “the one with the funny uniform.” If you know the (unfortunate) accuracy of the answer to this question, you just know. And if you don’t know, I won’t tell you.
A shin-length, pleated black wool skirt is probably the least offensive item of uniform my female school friends and I had to wear. It might not sound so bad (maybe even fashionable?) as a reader, but when you’re a 15 year-old Londoner who thinks you’re too cool for said school and (despite this) find yourself in itchy wool separates in the name of rules, you’re kinda gonna be mad about it, y’know?
This Kitty Joseph pleated skirt is like the version of uniform we mid-Noughties girls wished we could have worn, were it not for miserable English weather and infallible British tradition. Or like the crazier sister to your (slightly dowdy) best friend, or maybe the super-interesting girl at work who tells the best stories. You might assume that the descriptions above are exaggerations, but for a brand who at less than five years old has already demanded the attention of the likes of Carine Roitfeld, I’d say that Kitty Joseph-equalling-crazy-cool-sister is pretty darn accurate.
Light-years away from the yellow socks and winter cloaks of my decidedly uncool youth, then.
